The greatest part of life is to realise and appreciate life as it is. One of my ways of doing so is to appriciate my ancestors and what they did - which again somehow resulted in myself... The genealogy part of AkkuratD has focus on both directions in my family tree. Going back in time finding my anscestors is one task - but perhaps even more interesting is the task to find relatives still alive either it is my grand-dad's sister-in-law's grandchildren - or my cousine.

My ancestors originates basically from the area around Bergen (north, south, west and east of), i.e. Lindås, Ytre Sogn, Evanger, Austevoll. These are places where there are available quite some documentation - fortunately, at least back in to the late 1600 and early 1700. Therefore I have quite easily found information about my ancestors, but the registration and verification work is of course both time-consuming and often not so easy.

About Genealogy programs
I have been into genealogy for some years, but it is only since 1995 I've been registering the information in a computer based system. First I started out making my own little application. Later on I investigated the different of-the-shelf applications and finally I chose the WinFamily program.

Then when I had really need for more appropriate genealogy tool I bought The Master Genealogist (TMG). TMG is perhaps the best program available for my purposes but for those reading this and still looking for the perfect program for genealogy I can only say "I'm sorry". That program (the perfect one) is not available - and proberly never will be available - but I will advise you to have a look at the different programs in order to see which is right for you.

I can only say that I'm sorry not to use TMG from the start because the data I registered in WinFamily was not good (at all) when I really want to have documentation of e.g. sources. Still I'm constantly updating data in TMG which was badly entered in WinFamily (caused by the limited functionality in WinFamily). So the tip of the day must be that whenever choosing a genealogy program : Be sure and stick to the one you choose !

The Master Genealogist is made by Wholly Genes Inc. The program is extremely good for registration of family history and repeatedly recommeded by all professional genealogists. I recommed this one as the 'main' genealogy program, primary because it is easy to register the information properly first time around with excellent source documentation. Use TMG as the main program and then whatever program you want if the reporting etc. in TMG don't satisfy your needs. GEDCOM export/import is standard in most programs so GEDCOM can be an interface between different programs.

WinFamily is made in Denmark by Jamo. It is an easy program which covers the normal needs for registration. The reporting facilities are good with possibility to make your own reports. I recommend this one primary because of the graphical views and reports, but also the price.
